Agriculture In Pakistan

Agriculture occupies a high place in the Government’s scheme of priorities, as it constitutes the mainstay of national economy and over 70 percent of the country’s population lives in the rural areas, engaged in farming and agro-based activities. Agriculture employs some 53 percent of labour and provides 26 percent of GDP and 35 percent of foreign exchange earnings through export of raw produce.

During 1990-91, agricultural production recorded a growth rate of 5.1 percent. This has been achieved largely due to the Government policy of providing credit facilities to farmers, encouraging local manufacture and use of agricultural machinery & implements, facilitating joint ventures in assembly and production of tractors & making available adequate quantities fertilizers, quality seeds pesticides, etc. Agriculture in Pakistan is facing a number of problems.
