1. Agriculture sector is not only the biggest sector but it is also the mainstay of the economy. It provides employment, directly or indirectly, to almost 70% of the total population and accommodates nearly 42.1% of employed labour force.
2. Currently (in 2003-2004), it is contributing 23.3% to the GDP per annum, and as such a setback to agriculture productivity can affect the performance of the economy to a great extent.
3. The foreign trade of Pakistan is highly depending upon its exportable surplus which determines the capacity of the country to import goods and services. Presently, agriculture sector alone provides more than 45% of export goods (raw processed).
4. The expanding commercial and the growing industrial sectors are highly depending upon this sector.
