“All-You-Can-Eat” Deals Become Controversial After Fatwa

A Saudi cleric named Saleh al-Fawzan has deal out fatwa against all-you-can-eat buffets in Saudi Arabia, reported by Saudi Quranic TV station. The fatwa tries to add plate piling eateries to the long list of varieties banned by religious laws. The fatwa flashed argument on social media however it has become the most disapproval topic and issue of discussion. Fawzan’s fatwa are criticized by many users on the social sites.

“Whoever goes in the buffet and eats for 10 or 50 riyals without deciding the quantity they will eat is irreverent Sharia (Islamic) law,” the value and quantity of the food sold should be pre-determined before selling, Fawzan was quoted.

Twitter users are saying that “Restaurants will be ruined if they didn’t measure the food they sold. This disproves the sheikh’s idea that the quantity is unknown”. Whereas some twitter users condemned the cleric’s fatwa by using the hash tag “prohibiting-open-buffet” (in Arabic) others tweeted supporting it.

The authority to issue a fatwa in Saudi Arabia is the only religious council, Saudi Council of Muftis. It is blurred how much mass cleric Saleh al-Fawzan’s announcement has. The attention of local and regional newspapers has diverted to fatwa.
