Balochi Language

Balochi like Pushto is one of the old languages of Pakistan, and possibly descends from ancient Iranian dialect of Zend-Avesta, spoken in north and north-western areas of the Iranian world. In Balochistan, the language has two principal dialects, the Sulaimani, or the Eastern dialect prevalent in the Marri, Bugti, regions along the Sulaiman range, DG Khan in Punjab, and the adjacent area in Sindh, & the Makrani (also Saheli) or the Western dialect spoken in Kalat, Makran, Kharan and Chagai extending to parts of Iran and Afghanistan. These dialects differ is tone as well as vocabulary.

Written literature in Balochi came in to existence very late, and most of the Balochi folk songs have been handed down orally from generation to generation by poets, professional singers and mucisians, (doms). These folk songs consisted of epic themes.
