Barrages In Pakistan

A barrage is built across the river. Iron gates are fixed under the bridge. In this way the water of the river is diverted to canals. Gates can be controlled by machines for closing and opening. The quantity of water flowing in these canals can be increased with the help of three gates. There are three main barrages in send province.

Sukkur barrage: The first barrage on the river Indus was built near Sukkur in the year 1932. It is 1500 metres long. It has sixty six gates. Seven canals gather from this barrage. The three canals on the right side are the north western canal, the rice canal and Dadu canal. The four canals on the left side are the eastern Nara canal,Rrohri canal, the eastern Khairpur canal and the western Khairpur canal.

Kotri barrage: A Kotri barrage was built in 1943 at Jamshoro near Hyderabad it is close to Kotri. It has forty-four gates. Four canals get water from this barrage. The most famous canals of this barrage are Pinjari canal, Kalri canal and Phuleli canal.
