Cars And Colours – Automobiles

A car’s has always played a pivotal role in defining its character and Henry Ford’s famous statement regarding the Ford Model T sums it up well: “you can have it in any colour as long as it’s black.” According to DuPont Automotive’s Car Colour Index 2011 (a compilation of global automotive colour trends) beige, black, silver and white were the colours most preferred by car owners. North Americans went for white, Europeans preferred black, and silver was the favourite in Asia-Pacific (22 to 25% of respondents opted for these colours).

However, the world is not black-and-white and neither is the world of automobiles, hence a diverse palette of ‘new blacks and whites’. Sophisticated paint and colour technology have created a variety of effect including metallic and pearlescent reflective flakes that lend new nuances to black and white car paint thus creating more luxurious and sculptural finishes.

Silver is gaining popularity as a preferred car colour. Most people opt for it because it makes the car appear relatively clean even if there are scratches and nicks on the body. However there is a better reason to go for silver: according to research, silver car is significantly safer because they are involved in fewer serious accidents.

Apparently thieves also have their favourite car colours; carjackers tend to stay away from unusual and attention-grabbing colours like fire engine red and canary yellow, while white cars are popular target for theft in Pakistan since they are easy to over paint. And while your neon green car may be safe from carjackers, you will have to pay a higher insurance premium on it. The reason is that unusual and metallic colours are expensive to replicate and are usually associated with eccentric personalities.

The colour of your car effects the way people interact with you and your car- on the road and in the garage. So choose wisely or you might be mistaken for a person going through a mid-life crisis.
