Congress Ministries 1937-1939

The Congress Ministries lasted for a period less than two and a half years, from July 1937 to October-November 1939. The short period of the Congress rule was extremely crucial in the history of Hindu-Muslim relations and projected fully its Hindu racism and anti-Muslim policies.

Apart from launching a quite secular socio-cultural and politico-economic programme, it crushed all those moves which came from the Muslims in the Legislatures. For instance, when the Congress assumed power in the United provinces, in 1937 it immediately sponsored the abolition of zamindari bill in the Provincial Assembly.

But, the Provincial Congress Parliament Party of Bengal not only voted against it, but also staged a walkout in protest. It was Central Provinces that the Wardha scheme appeared in its most orthodox and (to the Muslims) offensive form.
