Consequences Of Zia’s Efforts For Implementation Of Islamic Laws

General Zia’s efforts for implementation of Islamic Laws did not bear fruit at all. During his regime political activities were restricted. As the result of these restrictions a vacuum of communication between political parties and public was created which proved fatal.

In the second step General Zia created controversies, pitched brother against brother, Shias against Sunnis, Muhajirs against Pathans, Sindhis, Punjabis and vice versa. He totally fragmented the society. Political dissenters were pilloried, jailed, hanged, persecuted and prosecuted.

General Zia announced the delay of elections on 2 October 1977 and formed a team of politicians which, in his own views, was the substitute of Parliament & on 24 December 1981 this team was named as Majlis-e-Shoora. In Sindh he encouraged nationalist’s leaders & ethnic groups.
