Control Of Water Logging And Salinity In Pakistan

According to rough estimate every one lakh acres of land is becoming non cultivable due to water logging and salinity in canal irrigated areas of Punjab and Sindh. We have only one organization of WAPDA to reclaim these lands with the help of SCARP schemes. In order to accelerate this work it is necessary that one or two more organizations should be established one each in Punjab and Sindh provinces to handle this work.

As it is WAPDA has many other works of water and power development also. So it is difficult for it to carry out additional work of SCARP schemes. Further efforts should be put in to construct cement concrete beds and walls of the irrigation canals to save the adjoining lands from water logging. Further on the banks of rivers long rooted tress should be planted and banana.

Orchards may be grown to use the excess water of underground water tables. If possible sugar cane also be grown on the banks of canals for this purpose so that the water table is checked and controlled from rising up. If large wells are dug and the underground water is allowed to drain by canals it can be used for irrigation of the fields at low levels.
