Day Of Deliverance – Second World War

The Second World War broke out in September 1939. The Viceroy Lord Linlithgow, proclaimed India’s entry into it without prior consultation with the Central Assembly or the main political parties. The subsequent negotiations of the Viceroy with Mahatma Quaid and other leaders proved fruitless in persuading either the Congress Muslim League to lend unconditional support to the war effort.

The Congress demanded a promise for Indian Independence and transfer for as much power as possible, before helping the British in the Second World War. As demand was not complied with, the Congress decided to withdraw its cooperation from the British Government in the prosecution of the War.

Ministries in provinces, in which the Congress party was in power, resigned between 27 October – 15 November, 1939, and governor assumed control of the administration.
