Economic Causes of British Traders

The English traders used to purchase raw materials at a cheap rate from India and used them to manufacture industrial goods in England which they used to bring back and sell in India markets. They had closed down cotton silken textile industries in India and large scale unemployment has resulted of the workers engaged in these textile industries.

The rural population started to migrate on large scale to nearby city areas in search of livelihood. The English rulers imposed heavy agricultural taxes on farmers and on nonpayment they took away the lands of defaulting farmers and auctioned them.

This resulted into the Great famine of Bengal in which thousands of Bengalis died and many epidemics also spread taking heavy toll of human beings. In addition to this the English rulers introduced Public Debt of India and made its recovery along with interest from the local farmers which revered them very weak financially.
