Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) Patient Suffering In Karachi

gbs-test-karachiI have a dear friend and he have rare disease of GBS in which body temporarily paralyses. He was admitted in Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) Karachi on 14 September and he is still admitted there with no progress in recovery and he is on ventilation which doctors have given him through throat and liquid food pipe is inserted through nose.

Doctors advised his family to take him to home because of viral flu and cough, his family almost did all the preparations for bringing him home with all necessary equipments under observation of AKU but now hospital people are saying that they don’t have vent they have only 5 ventilations so they cannot give one vent to my friend on rent to use at home.. It’s been 2 months and my friend who cannot speak a word is having a toughest time in hospital just staring the white ceiling and walls of the hospital.. Please advice what could be done..

People advise following:

GBS is an autoimmune disease in which the body itself starts attacking the peripheral nerves leading to muscle weakness and paralysis.
Respiratory support is very important because the muscles of the chest paralyze too, making it impossible to breath without the support.
Luckily, this is all reversible and patients can have a complete recovery.
The age of the patient and few other things determine the severity and the prognosis.
Don’t lose hope, it must be a tough situation for the family and friends but this is all treatable and reversible, but it surely takes a lot of time.

Don’t blame the doctors either that case kharab hogaya hai. It is much milder and resolves earlier when it happens in early stages of life and its severe and serious if it happens after the age of 40.
May Allah give good health to your friend.

Please don’t release your friend from the hospital from now. Ask the hospital to give you the complete case history file up til now (details of the condition he was brought in, treatment given and current status) because you would like to seek a second opinion. Show the case history to another good specialist doctor including a pulmonologist and seek his opinion. Go to 2-3 doctors within AKUH and other hospitals. See if there’s a negligence involved and then decide accordingly.
