Hydroelectricity In Pakistan

It is produced from river waters. About 42% of the electricity is produced through water resources. Hydroelectric projects are very expensive to build. However, the cost of production of electricity is very low. It is much cheaper than the thermal energy. Water after generating electricity can be used for irrigation. Besides, its production is free from air pollution. They hydroelectricity projects are located at the following dams:

  • Tarbela Dam: It is built on River Indus. It is the largest project of hydroelectricity. Tarbela Dam was completed in 1976. It is one of the largest dams in the world.
  • Mangla Dam: It is built on River Jhelum. It was completed in 1967.
  • Warsak Dam: It is built on the River Kabul. It was completed in 1960.

Thermal Energy: It is made from coal, oil and gas. About 58% electricity is obtained from thermal power houses. Thermal power station are located at Multan, Faisalabad, Kot Addu, Rohri, Jamshoro, Hyderabad and Karachi.
