India to Import Onions from Pakistan despite LOC Tensions

loc and onionsMumbai, Karachi: India has intended to import onions from Pakistan despite the persisting Line of Control (LoC) tensions, the Indian English national Times of India reported. The central government has decided to enlist Pakistan among the countries for continuing its trading relations. Along with Pakistan, India would be importing onions from Iran, Egypt and China.

India may also look to purchase Onions from Iran. Onions in Iran are comparatively sold at cheaper rates than Egypt and China. To enhance the import of onions in the state, the government has fixed $ 650 per ton owing to the critical results of the held elections.

Minister for Trade and Commerce, Mr. Anand Sharma has expressed his opinion that if the onions are sold at Rs. 35 per kg then the deficit in the importing amount could easily be met. However his proposed statement met non-acceptance from other political figures.

Previously the vegetable was sold at the range of Rs. 70 to Rs. 80 in Delhi, Calcutta, Patna and Chandigarh. While in Mumbai and Chennai the selling amount ranged between Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg.

Districts Maharashtra and Karnataka of India contribute to 40 production of the onion production in the country. The following month India has imported 6.94 million tons of onion from the months of April till July. However the onion production in the country for the year 2012-2013 is recorded to be 16.6 million ton.
