JI was established on 26th August in 1941 by Abdul A’la Maududi who was an Islamist philosopher and political commentator. He founded JI by getting inspired from many aspects Khilafat Movement, Indian nationalism and Indian National Congress as well as Hinduism which was high on Muslim community at that time. However was started as an Islamist social and political movement before the partition of India as JI was emerged as the first 75 members of the movement.

However JI had also faced severe government repression in 1948, 1953 and 1963. It is the only party who opposed the independence of Bangladesh and established their new branch named as Bangladesh Jamaat-i-Islami in 1975. There are several outgrowths of Jamaat-i-Islami which broke down into several independent organizations during the partition in 1947. The names of the JI’s offshoots are Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir. JI is having close relations with these organizations as well as other international Muslims groups.

Although, JI is led by Siraj Ul Haq these days who became Ameer of JI on 30th March, 2014. He is a former minister of the Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa province as he was elected to the KPK assembly in the 2002’s elections. Siraj Ul Haq has been elected as MPA from PK-95 constituency for three times. Siraj Ul Haq is also known as senior member of Parliament of Pakistan.

Syed Munawar Hassan remained Ameer of JI from 2008 till 2014 as earlier Qazi Hussain Ahmed had served on the post from 1987 -2008. Mian Tufail Mohammad had also remained Ameer of JI during 1972-1987 as he was elected by the Majlis-e-Shoura (council) in 1972.
