Kashmiri Islamic Scholars Issues Fatwa for Missing Persons’ Wives

Scholars from various sects after discussions among each other have passed fatwa, asking the Kashmiri women to revise their Nikahnama. This statement came upon for those women, whose husbands remain missing for last 4 years. This Fatwa means these women can marry any other me.

Kashmiri mass media report missing of around 25,000 Kashmiri men in last 20 years abducted at the hands of Indian forces. Of such men, their wives spent lives alone, with out their life partners. While for 2/3 of the Kashmiris, it is said that they have been killed and buried in combined graveyards at several locations. Often the Indian men and media would refer them as’ Kashmiri militants’.

Pertaining to the cases that relate to the wives and family issues of the missing persons, running NGO in the region of ‘Ehsas’ organization leader, Bashir Ahmed Dar said that the issue is a serious one and requires attention.

The NGO run ‘Ehsas’ organization has stepped forward and approached the scholars to express their views on the issue. It is a step to curb the deprived women.

One of the Indian journalists, Afshan Rashid, who is also victim of the case has complied her research work in book form. Presenting her sentiments, the lady writes,’ waiting for your missing husband is more painful than being a widow’.

The victims of ‘missing husbands’ case’ say that neither they can marry and begin their new married life nor they can stabilize their financial conditions by asking for pension. They also have no right to ask for grant of the hierarchal property, owing to the ‘unsolved case’.

The issue has left several of the women helpless in Kashmir, adding much to their already miserable state of life.
