Meaning Of Culture

When an individual joins a group he has to abide by a number of rules and procedures, together with certain associated set of idea and values, is called a culture. The simples and the shortest definition of culture is that ‘it is a social heritage’ or ‘it is the totality of way of life of the people’.

The classic definition of culture, given by anthropologist E.B. Taylor reads, ‘Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society’.

J.F. Cuber defines culture as ‘a continually changing pattern of learned behaviour and the products of learned behaviour (including attitudes, values, knowledge and material objects) which are shared by and transmitted among the members of society’.
