NICOP Must For Overseas Pakistanis To Vote In Elections

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has granted voting rights to 3.7 million overseas Pakistanis for the next general elections. All those Pakistanis who possess National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) would get registered in the Electoral Rolls.

A high level meeting of Election Commission of Pakistan was held in Islamabad which decided to give rights to Pakistanis for voting and registering their names in electoral list.

The voting mechanism has not yet been decided but few options of voting which included postal balloting; setting up polling booths in Pakistani embassies came into consideration.

Few days ago an ECP official disclosed that “All overseas Pakistanis above 18 years of age, having national identity cards for overseas Pakistanis would be eligible to cast their votes for the candidates in their native constituencies from next election.”

However some people are of the view that overseas Pakistanis should be given right to vote the political party as many of these overseas Pakistanis have not came to Pakistan from many years and therefore vote to the candidate of their constituency will be of no mean for them.
