Pakistani Researcher Dr Gul Shahnaz Earns UNESCO Partnership

Islamabad: Regardless of all the difficulties, Pakistani women are continuous to make their country honored at the global level.  Comprising over 50 percent of the world’s population, women around the world often face discouraging social, economic and political challenges. However women stand to be under-represented. Dr Gul Shahnaz is the latest adding to the list of Pakistani women who have won global honors and awards through their hard work and talent.

Dr Shahnaz is an Assistant Professor at the Quaid-i-Azam University’s Department of Pharmacy. Shahnaz is among 15 young women scientists from around the world who have been contributed the respected UNESCO-L’Oreal International Fellowships for the year 2014.

Gul Shahnaz’s study focuses on discovering a new drug delivery system that will increase quality of life for numerous Leishmaniasis patients around the globe, a tropical disease spread by sand flies that affects 12 million people in over 88 countries. Her research will look to control alternative ways of drug intake and to overcome the reduction in the drug’s effectiveness, which recovers its stability, releases it into the body in a time-controlled method. That expands the amount that actually reaches the bloodstream.

“It is a matter of pride for me and my family,” said by Shahnaz, who got her PhD in Pharmaceutical Technology from Austria’s University of Innsbruck. She marked in an email about her success. “But most of all, I am happy that Pakistan is getting represented in the international scientific community”, she added in her email. She is in Paris nowadays to collect the global award.
