Private member Israr Abbasi said that significant progress is expected from the meeting as we had already recommended action against the Geo in the earlier meetings. He said that PEMRA has converted their one day rolling into weeks despite having its own rules due to the Jung and Geo TV. Mian Shams Pervez said that we welcome the statement of Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Pervaiz Rasheed which was that “Government would not interfere in the affairs of PEMRA”. Mian Shams Pervez said that PEMRA authorities have been told in the last meeting to take decision according to the agenda but PEMRA did not speak on the issue of Geo and Jung. Fareeha Iftikhar said that Geo News defamed Pakistan Army and has committed blasphemy by negative broadcasting.
However, Pakistani authorities have suspended the licenses of three television channels Geo News, Geo Entertainment and Geo Tez owned by the Geo TV network due to the allegations and complaints against Geo TV network from all over the world. As a concluding decision on the cancellation of the licenses of Geo network will be announced on May 28, 2014.
