PML-Q was came up with the vision to promote a culture of reconciliation and accommodation in politics on 20th July in the year 2002. Although some of its significant leaders such as Pervaiz Elahi and Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain were once a party of ruling government Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

However group was broken down in 2001 and emerged as separate political party with name PML-Q who got great support by former president Pervez Musharraf during its time of inception because Musharraf wanted to decrease Nawaz government with the help of PML-Q. Pervaiz Elahi and Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain decided to make their own party after having differences with PML-N during 1997 general elections. PML-Q was started with a small number of people including Mian Muhammad Azhar, Syeda Abida Hussain, Syed Fakhar Imam and Khursid Kasuri. But after a while, renowned politicians started to join PML-Q gradually.

In general elections 2002, party received 25.7% votes and gained only 49 elected seats in general elections of 2008. Whereas PML-Q took part in 2013’s general elections in alliance with Pakistan Poeples Party (PPP) and won only 2 seats in national assembly, 8 seats in Punjab assembly and 4 seats in Baluchistan assembly.

PML-Q brought great progresses during 2002-2007 in order to boost Pakistan economically and developmentally. Such as increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), increment in Per capita income, foreign direct investment (FDI) became high, upswing in exports and increment in Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE). PML-Q became united Pakistan Muslim League (PML) in 2004 with the help of several PML factions and other political parties such as Farooq Leghari’s Millat Party, National Peoples Party, Pir Pagara’s PML (Functional), Arbab Ghulam Rahim’s Sindh Democratic Alliance and many more. Afterward Pir Pagara’s PML (Functional) separated with united PML due to which Pakistan Muslim League divided into three PML-Q, PML-N, and PML-F.

PML-Q also runs several wings named as Federal Capital Wing, Ulma e Mashaikh Wing, Women Wing, Human Rights Wing, Youth Wing, Culture Wing, Labour Wing, Lawyers Wing, Minorities Wing and others.
