Resolving The Kashmir Issue During Musharraf Government

Has President General Pervaiz Musharaf taken a U turn on Kashmir by softening Pakistan’s stands on plebiscite and allowing bus service between the two parts of Kashmir? This is a ridiculous accusation and reflects the ignorance of the accusers about the contents of the UN resolution on plebiscite in Kashmir.

Long before President Musharaf appeared on the scene, Pakistan had abandoned the UN resolution as a non starter, having realised in quick time soon after accepting it, that to implement its provisions would cost Pakistan dearly.

The working clause of the UN resolution asks Pakistan to withdraw its troops from Azad Kashmir to pave the way for plebiscite. India was allowed to keep its forces in Kashmir to maintain law and order and provide assistance in the conduct of plbiscite.
