Silk, Artificial Silk Industry In Pakistan

The silk made by silk yarn obtained from silk worm is a rare commodity in Pakistan so no silk industry could be established in Pakistan. However artificial silk or synthetic silk mills have been set up in Pakistan. For these mills some artificial silK yarn is manufactured in Ravi Rayon Mills and Kala Shah Kaku Rayon Mills which is quite insufficient to provide raw material to artificial silk mills of Pakistan.

Therefore yarn is imported from other countries. At present (in 2006 , 45000 looms of artificial silk are functioning and their average annual production is 19 million square meter out of which 4 million square meters are exported and we earn 105 million rupees as foreign exchange.

Big artificial silk mills are in Karachi, Faisalabad, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Peshawar, Saidu Sharif, Swat, Hyderabad, Khairpur, Larkana, Rohri and Sukkur. Out of them the important ones are Karim Silk Mills and Iqbal Silk Mills other 24 mills are working in Karachi. In Faisalabad 50 big and small units are manufacturing artificial silk.
