live stock pakistanRearing of animals is one of the oldest and most common occupations of the people of Pakistan as most of the people of our country live in village and a majority of them are farmers. Every farmer owns a team of bullocks or buffaloes to help him to till the fields, thrash the crops and to turn the Persian wheels brings the irrigation water to his land.

The cows or buffaloes provide milk, butter and ghee for the farmer’s family. Besides these, sheeps, goats, camels, donkeys, mules’ horses and poultry are reared to fulfill various necessities of life.

Wool is obtained from sheep, goats and cattle are slaughter for their meat and the dung of cattle is used both as manure and for making dung cakes to be used as fuel for cooking. Their hides and skin are used to make leather, leather goods etc to be exported too their countries. Donkey, ponies, mules and camels are reared as beasts of burden.

Poultry farms and duck farms are established for their meat and eggs. As the population is rapidly growing the need of live stock is also correspondingly increasing. From fresh water, fish and from sea, marine fish, prawns, ray fish lobsters are caught and their white flesh is consumed. From the fish harbours of Makran coast large quantity of fish and prawn catch is canned and exported. Egg and chicken meat is also exported.

In forests rearing silk worms and honey bees is also done
In Pakistan the pasture land is limited and heavily over grazed which causes great damage to pastures. The pasture land needs rest because the roots of shrubs and fodder keep the particles of sand intact and fertile. In over grazed lands poor grass is therefore growing. In Punjab and Sindh such lands are used as pasture lands which cannot be cultivated because of lack of rains and irrigation water. However on the slopes of hills some grass grows so sheep and goats are reared. Pakistan lags behind the other countries in rearing her live stock.
