What is Future Of Receptionist in Organization?

dear Workplace Sanity, I am 39 years old and have been working as a receptionist for the last 14 years. I have two Master degrees ( in English and Economics) and i have been applying for jobs that match my qualifications, but have been applying for jobs that match my qualifications, but have been unable to find one.

I  have spoken to my seniors about the possibility of a transfer into another department; they all say that they do not have any issue with this. Despite this, they hire new people who have no work experience, or transfer the people i have trained into other departments, who do not have my qualifications. To make things worse, there are chances for promotions in other departments, while there are no possibilities for growth in mine. Stuck in a Career Pit

Dear Stuck in a Career Pit,

So, you are over qualified and stuck in a lowly job with no career growth… but others around you seem to be moving ahead. Well, you are not alone. Lots of people are in a similar predicament. The biggest mistake they make is assuming a DEGREE is all they need to get ahead in life. Unfortunately, a degree is just the beginning. You need much  more than a degree for continued success.

Every role in an organisation requires specific knowledge, skills and abilities to fulfil responsibilities successfully. As a receptionist, you hopefully have good telephone handling and customer-facing skills, but do you have department specific skills such as letter/e-mail correspondence, basic Excel and office management?

It is never too late to learn, and the best place to learn is ON THE JOB. I recommend you ”S-up”.  No, not ‘Shut-up’,- rather develop a learner’s mindset with: Show-up (be on time ready to give your 100%), Speak-up (make suggestions for improvement), Step-up (volunteer for work no one else wants), and Serve-up (take care of internal and external customers, go the extra mile).

Transform your degrees into career-boosting actions. All the success! Workplace Sanity
