Banks Accounts of SSGC put on hold by FBR over default Taxes

Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC); all accounts have been frozen due to non-payment of taxes by The Federal Board of Revenue.

The FBR through its Large Taxpayers Unit of Karachi has seized all banks accounts of SSGC in order to recover taxes of around Rs.26 billion from the company.

FBR has attached details of various bank accounts of SSGC in an official document showing the reported unpaid General Sales Taxes (GST) which was paid to the company by the users in their monthly bills along with the utility charges.

Appellate Commissioner (Appeal), has confirmed the unpaid amount of GST, the official statement added. However, an inconsiderable amount of Rs.312 million recovered after the strict action of the authority.

SSGC’s Response

In response to the action taken by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), SSGC addressed this action of FBR as one taken in advance without considering the legal procedures. Salman Siddiqui, the SSGC Spokesman, said the Large Taxpayers Unit has issued notices to banks for freezing accounts before the release of the verdict of the Appellate Tribunal.

He further added that the GST was imposed on the SSGC due to the transfer of Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) to Sui Northern Pipeline Gas Limited, which is contrary to the rules, illogical and unjustified in the view of the company.

SSGC has filed a petition against the action of FBR for recovery of tax in the Sindh High Court through freezing bank accounts. According to SSGC, the court withdrew the notice of the Large Taxpayers Unit and ordered FBR to keep waiting for the decision of the Appellate Tribunal.
