The turnout was unexpectedly large with full participation by candidates. The new National Assembly met on 21 March 1985 & Zia restored constitution of 1973 with previously promulgated constitutional changes announced on 2 March. Zia picked Muhammad Khan Junejo as Prime Minister. Once sworn in, the Prime Minister went on to display remarkable independence and announced that democracy and Martial Law could not co-exist.
