The First World War (1914-18) caused horrible slaughter and destruction in the countries of Europe and Asia. It produced a horror of war and created an idea to set up an international organisation which would prevent the outbreak of wars in future. As a result of such ideas, and as a result of the discussion in the Peace Conference in Paris, in 1919, an agreement was reached by the victorious Governments to set up an international body, to be called the League of Nations.<\/p>
