Most of the believe that playing musical instruments as well as sculpturing and painting living objects is not permitted by religious. They hold that overindulgence in these pursuits arouses lust and passion to such a great degree that it causes degeneration of the human personality and ultimately disintegration of the human society.

Some take a comparatively lenient view and are ready to make permissions provided certain restraints are observed. Notwithstanding religious restraints, the coming to the sub-continent from Iran and Arabia brought with them a very strong tradition of music, instrumental as well as vocal.

Musicians’ mere treated with equal consideration and regard the king’s court and the saint’s monastery (khanqah). Amir Khusro and Taan Sen are the two most outstanding examples. Khusro himself was an observing Sufi who introduced the singing of Ghazal. He innovated and brought in new musical instruments. Taan Sen enjoyed great prestige.
