Muhammad Khan Junejo’s Period

The General Elections were held on 25 February 1985, for National Assembly and on 27 February 1885, for four provincial assemblies. The turnout was unexpectedly large with full participation by candidates. The new National Assembly met on 21 March 1985 & Zia restored constitution of 1973 with previously promulgated constitutional changes announced on 2 March.

Zia picked Muhammad Khan Junejo as Prime Minister. Once sworn in, the Prime Minister went on to display remarkable independence and announced that democracy and Martial Law could not co-exist.

He took further step, introduced political parties and announced the lifting of Martial Law by 30 December, 1985. Thus, he sent the armed forces back to their barracks, ending the third and longest period of Martial Law, and restored the constitution in full.
