Lahore Fort (Shahi Qila)

Lahore Fort, better known as Shahi Qila, is very important monument of antiquity. Its origin dates back to prehistoric times but gained importance from twelfth century AD when it was rebuilt by Ghiasuddin Balban.

The chief element of its beauty however lies in its simpleness and purposeful strength. It was during the time of Akbar the Great that the mud fort was replaced by a new one of burnt-brick masonry. Later on the successors of Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb made numerous additions in the main building area which added richness and colour to the origional plan.

The most remarkable buildings inside the Fort are Moti Masjid, Diwan-e-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), Diwan-e-Khas (Hall of Lords), Shish Mahal (Place of Mirrors), Naulakha and the Maktab Khana (School).
