Mangla And Tarbela Dam

The Mangla Dam is located on the Jhelum river near the village of Mangla, about 32 km from Jhelum town. As a multi-purpose project, Mangla Dam was completed in 1967 with a gross storage capacity of 5.35 MAF (Million Acre Feet ) and live storage capacity of 4.81 MAF.

It has a lake area of 250 km. The present generating capacity of the dam is 800 MW with an ultimate capacity of 1000 MW. The Tarbela Dam is located on the Indus near the village of Tarbela about 47 km upstream from Attock.

It is a multi-purpose project designed to store water during the monsoons when the Indus swells and flood waters become a hazard for the surrounding areas and go waste into the Arabian Sea.
