Pakistan Handicraft & Folk Arts

It has been aptly said that ‘Pakistan early history is molded in ceramics, welded in metals and woven in textiles’. Attuned to the local environment and resources, the folk arts and craft has been conditioned by climate and other geographical factors. Thus every physically different area has acquired a characteristic profile. Sindh has the oldest tradition of cotton-weaving, dyeing and designing, ceramics, glass and

pottery; Balochistan is popular in producing high standard items of needle work, rug-making, leather designing and decorated weaponry; the North-West Frontier stands out for folk-carvings, ceramics and metal-work; and Punjab has become a legend in wood-work, wood-carving and inlay works. Folk music has always enjoyed popularity among the people of various regions in Pakistan.
