Spinach – Superfood According To Nutritionists

Popeye the Sailor Man swore by his can of spinach, and decades later, spinach continues to be hailed as a superfood by nutritionists across the world. This is because it has anti-inflammatory and antoxidant properties; it is also packed with nutrients that provide a host of health benefits.

  • Boosts immunity. Spinach is packed with vitamins A and C, which help improve immunity and protect your body against harmful toxins and viruses; they also reduce the risk of inflammation.
  • Improves digestion. Spinach vegetable contains phytonutrients that help improve liver function and prevent bacterial overgrowth in the gut. This leafy green also protects the colon from the harmful effects of free radicals. Meanwhile, spinach stalks are loaded with fiber that can help detoxify your body and improve your digestive function.
  • Maintains a healthy heart. Spinach contains two antioxidants, neoxanthin, and violaxanthin, which help prevent inflammation, improve blood circulation and maintain blood pressure – essential for a healthy heart. The presence of lutein prevents artery walls from thickening; this in turn reduces the risk of heart attacks.
  • Prevents cancer. Spinach is rich in cartenoids which protect cells from mutation and reduce the chances of the occurrence of tumours, and, consequently, cancer.
  • Promotes good eyesight. Spinach is loaded with beta-carotene and xanthenes which improve eye health. Furthermore, the presence of zeaxanthin protects your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays and minimizes the risk of macular degeneration (an age-related eye disorder) and cataracts.
