The Thar Deserts

Out on the east stretches the sixth division mentioned above, the vast Thar desert which goes far into India & north into the Bahawalpur division of Pakistan, where it is called Cholistan. On the west is the kherthar range, close to the river. About 80km east of Karachi is the vast delta, with many creeks inhabited by fisherman.

The Thal is a wind blow desert, studded with sand dunes and some salt lakes. It lies in the south-east of the lower Indus plain and being a part of the large Rajasthan desert, extends into India. Eastern Bahawalpur, Khairpur and the great part of Tharparker district are all desert areas.

The southern portion of the plain comprises the deltaic flood plain and tidal delta. The Rann of Kutch, divided between Pakistan and India under the 1968 agreement, lies on the east of the sub-region of delta.
