Titu Mir (1782-1832) – Brief Profile

Titu Mir real name was Nisar Ali. He was a great reformist of Muslims of Bengal after Haji Shariatullah. He also tried to reform the Muslims of Bengal and made them interested in Islamic teaching. He established a centre in a village Narkelbaria near Calcutta Gradually the number of his followers began to increase and he declared himself independent. He also constructed a fort of bamboos at Narkelbaria.

In order to strengthen his power he collected arms and ammunition and appointed Muslim Khan as commander of his forces and Miskin Shah as he adviser. After that he started to fight against the Hindu Zamindars.

In their turn the Zamindars perpetrated more cruelty on the landless farmers working under them and sought help of the English people. In an encounter the British forces killed 50 soldiers to Titu Mir including Titu Mir. It was the time when Syed Ahmed Shaheed and his troops were crushed at Balakot in NWFP.
