At present there are about twenty two universities functioning in various parts of the country. A University Grants Commission is established to coordinate the activities of these universities. To improve the standard and quality of education in these universities, following steps has been taken;
1. For the training of high level man power in certain critical areas and to carry out advanced studies & research, 9 Centres of Excellence have been established.
2. To understand the language and literature, social structure and customs of the people of other regions of the country, five Pakistan Study Centres have been established at the University of Punjab, Sindh, Peshawar, Karachi and Balochistan.
3. A National Institute of Pakistan Studies has also been established at the Quaid-e-Azam University of Islamabad.
