Vintage and Classic Car Club of Pakistan Rally From 12th November

The annual Vintage and Classic Car Club of Pakistan (VCCCP) cross-Country Rally – now in its fifth edition – is all set to kick off from Karachi on November 12 and is expected to reach its final destination, Peshawar, on November 23. Of the participating vintage vehicles (most of which date to the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s), the star attractions at this year,s rally include Alfa Romeos, Austin Healeys, Ford Mustangs, Mercedes 108s, MGBs and MG Midgets – in addition to a Cadillac Eldorado, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Thunderbird, Jaguar Mark VII and a V8 Pontiac Firebird.

In keeping with tradition, several classic car shows have been planned this year in Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Peshawar, which will provide auto enthusiasts the chance of admiring automobiles from an era when design, build quality and prestige came packaged in a headymix of chrome, leather and aluminium. Although this may sound like double Dutch, one look at these beauties cruising at high speeds is all it will take to get you hooked.

Covering a distance of almost 400 kilometres a day, the Rally,s expected stops include Sukkur, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Lahore, Islamabad and Ayubia. After the Rally,s conclusion, the vehicles will be  showcased at the much-awaited Islamabad Auto Show.   Acquiring and maintaining vintage beauties, as well as events that showcase them are rare in Pakistan for a myriad of reasons, one of which is that the local car industry views the import of search cars as competition and in a bid to protect their local manufacturing operations, the industry has effectively lobbied for a ban on the import of cars older than three years, choking off a nescent hobby in the process. This is a pity, because appreciating and owning these works of art of should not be confined to a few fortunate individuals.
