Punjab Assembly Passes Resolution Against Early Marriage

Child marriageLahore: Punjab Assembly passed amendment Bill 2015 with majority relating to the prohibition of underage marriage after passing this amendment Bill by Sindh assembly. According to the text of the bill the families of the children who got married their children in early age must have paid a fine of 50 thousand rupees as well as 6 months imprisonment will be given to them while penalty will be applied on Nikkah reciter also.

It is pertinent to mention that before this according to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act of 1929, a one month imprisonment and Rs.1, 000 fined have also been imposed on the family who married their child in early age. However, after passing this bill, Nikkah recitor will also have to face fines and penalties in this regard.

It is also worth mentioning here that resolution against child marriage was an attempt of PML-N woman legislator Azma Zahid Bokhari Who debated on this matter seriously during Private Members’ Day of Punjab Assembly chaired by Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan. While discussing this matter lots of issues were emerged which also created negative impression.[alert style=”white”]However Punjab assembly passed this resolution with the great majority who supported this bill by saying that it will enhance our society in good way as lots of child marriage cases have come into practice.[/alert]
