Shoes For The Wedding Season – Kolhapuri chappals, Peshawari chappal

Exquisitely crafted Pakistani footwear has long enjoyed a loyal following in Pakistan and overseas, particularly in countries where Pakistani and Indian communities have a presence. However, it is only recently that our indigenous designs have caught the fancy of the international fashion industry. As a result, quintessential Pakistani footwear can now be seen on modelling ramps across the world’s fashion capitals, making it trendier than ever before- just in time for the wedding season!

Hand-embroidered and embellished khussas, or Saleem Shahis – a favourite of the Mughal Emperor Jehangir are ideally worn with pishwas and sherwanis. While khussas are readily available anywhere in Pakistan, it is in Multan and Faisalabad where the original karigars of these royal shoes practice their craft. Prices range from anywhere between Rs 700 and 5,000, depending on the quality of material and embellishments used.

Hand-woven kolhapuri chappals – originating in Kolhapur, India – are equally popular. Boasting leather soles and toe loops made of colourfully- dyed June doris, kolhapuris are a jahez and bari essential , since they offer comfort without compromising on style; the less elaborate designs are perfect for casual evening. Kolhapuris are also popular in rural Balochistan ; the thick soles make them the footwear of choice for people having to walk miles across the region’s rocky terrain. The cost of owning a kolhapuri typically ranges anywhere between Rs 850 and 7,500.

Later but definitely not the least, is the Kaptaan Chappal (also known as the Peshawari chappal) – named after Imran Khan – after he led the Pakistan cricket team to its only World Cup victory in 1992. Although this chappal has been popular for decades, it become the rage not only after it ‘inspired’ Paul Smith last year, but after a pair was presented to Imran Khan on his wedding by a karigar in Peshawar earlier this year. A custom-made , crossover strap Peshawari chappal is usually priced at approximately Rs 10,000.
